Simons Halifax
A coast-to-coast success
The latest store of La Maison Simons has opened for the first time in the Maritimes, within Nova Scotia's largest shopping center, in the heart of Halifax. With a surface of 56,000 square feet spread over 2 floors, the new store is part of the rehabilitation project of the space formerly occupied by the now defunct Sears banner in the Halifax Shopping Center.
LemayMichaud's mandate was to enhance the store's visibility and assert its identity through distinctive architectural treatment of the facades. Additionally, the mandate included the redesign of the entire interior space, in collaboration with McKinley Studios.
Tribute to the maritime heritage
For this project, the team drew inspiration from naval architecture, a strong symbol deeply rooted in Nova Scotia's history, and a heritage unique to the Simons family, who were sailing manufacturers in the 19th century. Through an articulated play of triangles inspired by folding and origami, the facades unfold like large white boat sails, a gesture accentuated by light and shadow effects.
Inside, a "Shop in Shop" concept is implemented; the departments are defined by architectural drops, through which each space reveals a distinct identity and aesthetic. The gypsum ceilings of the main circulation areas thus delineate the different departments. With this 17th store, La Maison Simons is now present from coast to coast across Canada. To mark this fact, each section is inspired by a city or major region of the country.
